Thank you for your participation in the 2022 NASN Film Festival, sponsored by the DeSales Secular Institute.

This special event is being held in conjunction with world-wide Salesian events honoring the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, 400 years after his death in 1622, as well as the 450 anniversary of the birth of St. Jane Frances de Chantel, who co-founded the Visitation of Holy Mary religious order with St. Francis de Sales.

Submissions for the 2022 NASN Film Festival are being accepted from Monday, September 12 at 4:00pm EDT through Monday, October 31st at 9:00pm, EDT.

We will be awarding $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place finishers.

We are offering these awards for both Student and Non-Student Categories. The 2022 NASN Film Festival will be available for viewing on Saturday, November 12th at 8:00pm EST on the Embraced by God YouTube Channel at https://youtube.com/channel/UCU0Jn3w03Dagykpf4LYcLJA.

 

Submission Information

● The deadline to submit entries is Monday, October 31st, 9:00pm, EDT

● When you email your film file to us, include within the email message the name of the film, the name of the director and producer of the project, and the best email to get in contact with you.

● Please indicate in your submission email whether the entry is to be judged as a Student or Non-Student entry.

● All particapants under 18 must complete and submit a waiver with their entry.

Guidelines

● Production Company Logos
○ Logos may have a maximum of three seconds of screen time.
○ Logos must be placed at the start of the film.
○ No distracting music or sound effects are permitted to accompany the logo.
○ If more than one production company logo is used, they all must appear on screen together.  In other words, please limit your production company logos to a single (three-second) title card.

● Copyrights, Music, and Other Licensed Materials
○ The copyright statement should appear at the end of the final credits.
○ Copyright the film to your production company. Do not use your own name for copyright.
○ Any music (or other elements in the film) that are copyrighted and/or trademarked must be legally licensed by the filmmaker for use in the film. NASN reserves the right to require proof of licensing from the filmmakers. Music requires both a Sync License and a Master Use License. Trademarked elements (such as logos that are prominently featured) require a signed release from the owner of the trademark. Logos that appear incidentally, on wardrobe or in the background, are allowed under the Fair Use doctrine.

● File Formats
○ The acceptable file formats are MPEG-4 (.mp4) and Quicktime (.mov).
○ The MAXIMUM file size for submissions is 500 megabytes.
○ Video files must be properly named, as follows: LastName_FirstName_FilmTitle (Example: Gloman_Chuck_NightmaresAreReal).

● Content
○ Entries may be any length and any type: documentary, music video, animation, etc.
○ Non-English (foreign language) videos may be submitted but must provide English subtitles.
○ To support the theme of the festival, the film must include, either in the narrative or visually, a Salesian quote or quotes found on the North American Salesian Network webpage:  https://www.salesiannetwork.org/salesian-quotes-and-themes/
○ The NASN Film Festival is a public event that is presented by the North American Salesian Network (NASN) and sponsored by the DeSales Secular Institute. Standards relating to content are stricter than what is typically allowed to screen in TV/Film classes. Content that could be considered objectionable by NASN will not be screened. (graphic violence, nudity, excessive profanity, graphic drug use, exploitative situations & themes, etc.)

○ The film may not be shared on social media prior to the 2022 NASN Film Festival on November 12, 2022.
○ By submitting to this event you give NASN permission to post your film on their social media accounts for the sole purpose of promoting Salesian spirituality. The films will not be used for any revenue generating purposes.

● Judging Criteria
Please keep in mind that the NASN Film Festival judges will evaluate submitted work by applying the following criteria:
○ Does the film have a strong, well-told story?
○ Is the film’s protagonist or subject fully developed?
○ Is the film technically proficient?
○ Is the film appropriate for a Christian audience?

 

Awards Notification

● First, second and third place winners in Student and Non-Student categories will be announced during the Film Festival.
● Winners will be personally notified within one week after the festival to obtain information
regarding award payments.
● Award payments will be made by check in US dollars.
